Old School XP for 5e

There has been a bit of a discussion about XP and how to handle it with 5e.  The question was "do you prefer using XP vs Event based".  Personally event based isn't really old school to begin with.  Here are my thoughts thus far:

1.  I've played in a few hand waving 5e sessions, where we just level up.  My problem with this is, while learning a system you are also learning your Character and what it can do.  If I get to level up after every other adventure, I barely have time to learn what my cleric can do at 3rd level before he automatically gets a whole pile of new things he can do at 4th.

2.  I find the first 5 levels in 5e XP tables go really quickly.  I like 1-3rd level characters, I like them fighting meatshields, hiring meatshields, and not being epic god like characters that go on huge world end disaster quests, where they have to fight demons.

3.  I was thinking about the idea of using gold for XP, plus awards for role playing your character, completing quests (like the general XP table in 2e).

So without further ado, here's my idea, and its only a suggestion.

Go on over to http://www.purpleworm.org/rules/ for the 2nd edition rules.  (I have no idea how these are available online without issue from wotc).

Here's the 5e Classes and my suggestions for the 2e experience tables you should use.
Note: Use Recommended Hit Dice from 5e.

Obviously this is just a suggestion and hasn't been playtested.
